The Indian delegation led by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held “constructive” meetings with officials in the US government during its visit to New York this week, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

It added that the two sides also discussed the possible contours of a Bilateral Trade Agreement. However, the statement fell short of mentioning the next date of formal negotiations for the deal, or whether such a date has been decided. The Indian team had been in the U.S. from September 22-24, while sources have confirmed that the Mr. Goyal returned to India a few days later.

“A delegation led by the Commerce and Industries Minister visited the United States of America from September 22 to 24, 2025,” the statement said. “The Minister had meetings with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative and Mr. Sergio Gor, U.S. Ambassador designate to India.”

It added that, apart from meetings with the U.S. government representatives on bilateral trade matters, the Indian delegation held discussions with key U.S. based businesses and investors on how to promote trade and investment between India and the U.S.

“The delegation had constructive meetings with the U.S. government on various aspects of the deal,” the statement added. “Both sides exchanged views on possible contours of the deal and it was decided to continue the engagements with a view to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement.”

The last official negotiation round, the sixth so far, was to have taken place in New Delhi during the last week of August, but was called off in the wake of the reciprocal and penalty tariffs — totally amounting to 50% — the U.S. imposed on imports from India.
