H3N2 Flu Alert in Delhi: All about the viral infection, symptoms and recovery period

The national capital of India, Delhi is going through an outbreak of the H3N2 flu, a type of influenza A virus. Hospitals have sounded an alert to make the public aware of this deadly strain, its symptoms and how to recover on time. Knowing the nature of H3N2 and how it infects the body can also lead the citizens to take appropriate measures and consult a doctor early if necessary.

What is H3N2 flu

H3N2 is a type of influenza A virus responsible for seasonal outbreaks of flu, appearing harmless in the beginning, quickly this strain gets mutated, which is at times more difficult to manage compared to other strains. The virus gets easily transferred from one individual to another by way of respiratory droplets when an infected individual coughs, sneezes or speaks. Even close proximity to an infected individual and coming into contact with contaminated surfaces can also be a factor.

  • Severe fever (usually sudden onset)
  • Persistent cough
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches and muscle pains
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • At times, nausea or vomiting (more frequent in children)

The symptoms typically develop 1-4 days following exposure to the virus. Although most individuals can recover without any complications, the flu might on occasion develop into a more severe illness like pneumonia, (in older adults, young children and pregnant women)

Recovery time

Majority of healthy people get over H3N2 flu within a week or two by resting, while others use over-the-counter medication to relieve symptoms like fever and body pain as well. Nevertheless, consult a doctor early if the symptoms do not disappear or get worse with time.Physicians can even prescribe anti-viral drugs, which work best if taken 48 hours after the presence of the virus is confirmed in the body. These medications can decrease the severity and duration of the illness.

Prevention:

Reducing the chances of this virus:

  • Getting vaccinated each year against the flu, often a vaccine that includes protection against H3N2 viruses
  • Frequent handwashing with soap and water
  • Staying away from infected people
  • Covering the mouth while coughing and sneezing with elbows or tissues
  • Wearing masks when in populated or confined areas
  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that are frequently touched on a regular basis

H3N2 is becoming an enormous health threat with its transmissible nature and ability to be severe. Delhi citizens are advised to remain abreast, take precautions and seek out medical healthcare professionals if they notice any of the aforementioned symptoms. Also See: Coronavirus Symptoms: New COVID variant sparks concern: Here’s what early symptoms look like
