The announcement follows a comment Sam Altman made just months prior, in an August 7 podcast interview with Cleo Abram, where he appeared to boast about not having created a “sex bot.” When asked about a decision that was “best for the world but not best for winning,” Altman replied by emphasizing the “very special relationship” OpenAI has with its users, built on trying to “help you accomplish whatever you ask.”He stated the company has refrained from actions that could “grow [the company] faster” or get users to “spend more time in ChatGPT,” citing the long-term incentive of staying aligned with users. When pressed for a specific example, Altman stated: “Well, we haven’t put a sex bot avatar in ChatGPT yet.”

The decision to open up to erotic content for adults comes amid mounting scrutiny over ChatGPT’s impact on minors.
