‘I never let him pay ever’: Genelia D’souza on normalising ‘splitting bills’ on dates

Paying the bill on a date, especially in India, is often considered to be a man’s responsibility. While many men may do it willingly, some women prefer to do it on a sharing basis. For actor Genelia D’souza, it’s always about dividing the expenses fairly. “I always work, I always share the bill with Ritesh. I never let him pay the bill ever, and that’s something I have followed to date…I pay at once, he pays once…That is not a decision-making that a boy only has to pay…,” she toldInstant Bollywood.

Splitting the bill: yay or nay?

Perception architect Vivek Vashist told indianexpress.com. “It depends on what you’re actually splitting, is it the bill or the meaning behind it. When you’re dating, the gesture is symbolic. The one who pays isn’t just moving money; they’re communicating intent, care, and sometimes, power. If both people are emotionally literate, they can treat it as an energy exchange, where one offers and the other receives with grace, and it balances out over time.”

In marriage, though, Vashist added, it’s a different game. You’re not just sharing a table, you’re sharing life infrastructure. Bills become logistics, not courtship rituals. What matters is whether the system feels fair, not mathematically, but emotionally. If one earns more, or one runs the house’s invisible labour, the split can’t just be 50–50. The right ratio is the one that maintains respect and prevents resentment.

Should splitting on dates be normalised?

Partly, yes, asserted Vashist. “The idea that the man must pay is a hand-me-down from centuries where provision was proof of masculinity and safety. But pretending we’ve outgrown that overnight is naïve. Evolution doesn’t move at the speed of hashtags. The urge for a man to pay is an ancient wiring for protection. The hesitation from women to let him pay is also a way to test emotional safety and sincerity. Both are valid instincts, but they become toxic when left unexamined.”

Normalising splitting the bill makes sense only when it’s born from awareness, not ideology. If you’re splitting to prove a point, you’re still trapped by the old script, just reading it backwards. True modernity is when both partners can choose freely; sometimes he pays, sometimes she does, and sometimes they alternate, with no one keeping emotional receipts. So, no splitting shouldn’t be a rule. Self-awareness should.

Managing societal conditioning

Vashist explained, “Society taught men that money equals worth and women that acceptance equals survival. Even now, most arguments about bills are proxy wars for dignity, safety, and validation. The man fears being emasculated, the woman fears being undervalued.”

Both are reacting to inherited ghosts. Class and ego complicate it further. A dinner debate over ₹1,200 means something very different to a couple barely making rent than it does to one debating philosophy on Instagram. The richer you are, the more abstract your feminism becomes, he further added.

In truth, the “who pays” question is a mirror, reflecting what we still believe about gender, self-worth, and love. When both partners can sit across a table and see each other rather than their roles, the conditioning finally breaks.
