A leopard was rescued on Wednesday morning after it entered the second floor of an under-construction building in Bhandewadi, a densely populated area in Nagpur.

As officials of the Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) tranquillised the animal, which they said was found inside a toilet of the building, people gathered in large numbers near the spot.

Once the leopard was unconscious, team members safely brought it down using a net, secured it in a cage, and transported it back to the Transit Centre for further care, said an officer.

Officials of the Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) that rescued the wild cat told The Indian Express that the leopard was located inside a toilet of the building.

Once the leopard was unconscious, team members safely brought it down using a net, secured it in a cage, and transported it back to the Transit Centre for further care, said an officer. Senior officers will now determine whether the leopard will be released back into the wild or kept in permanent captivity.

According to reports, the Transit Rescue Team, consisting of veterinarian Dr Rajesh Phulsunge, veterinary assistant Siddhant More, and others, reached the spot following an alert at the TTC office in Seminary Hills at 10.20 am.

The Nagpur Police assisted the rescue team by clearing the way for the rescue operation.

A few days ago, a leopard was spotted near the wall of the TCS company in the Mihan area, causing panic.

A senior officer in the rescue team told The Indian Express, “The tragedy is that despite the extent of human-wildlife conflict in Nagpur, the Forest Department does not appear capable of fully equipping the rescue team here. Ample funds were provided to other districts for cages and rescue equipment, but not to Nagpur.”
