NEW DELHI: During a Diwali visit to the historic Ghantewala sweet shop in Old Delhi, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi tried his hand at making traditional sweets, where shop owner Sushant Jain expressed his wish to see Gandhi married and secure the wedding sweets order.Rahul Gandhi participated in making Imarti and Besan Laddus during his visit to the centuries-old establishment. He shared his experience on social media platform X.

“I tried my hand at making Imarti and Besan Laddus at the famous and historic Ghantewala sweet shop in Old Delhi. The sweetness of this centuries-old prestigious shop remains the same even today – pure, traditional, and heart-touching. The true sweetness of Diwali lies not just in the platter, but also in relationships and society,” Gandhi posted.

The shop owner, Sushant Jain, shared details about Gandhi’s visit and his interaction with the Congress leader.“He (Rahul Gandhi) wanted to buy sweets for his home, friends, and relatives. I said, ‘Sir, you’re most welcome — this is your own shop.’ When he came, he said he would make them himself and taste them too. His father, the late Rajiv ji, really liked imarti, so I said, ‘Sir, you should try that.’ So he made imarti. He really likes besan laddus too, so I said, ‘Sir, you can make those as well.’ So he made these two items,” Jain said.Jain also commented on Gandhi’s bachelor status, saying, “All of India is talking about him being the most eligible bachelor. I said, ‘Rahul ji, please get married soon — we’re waiting, so that we can get the order for your wedding sweets too.'”Gandhi concluded his social media post by asking the public about their Diwali celebrations, writing, “Tell us all, how are you celebrating your Diwali, and how are you making it special?”The visit took place during the five-day Diwali festival, which begins with Dhanteras, when people traditionally purchase jewelry or utensils and perform worship.The second day is Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Chhoti Diwali or Small Diwali.The main celebrations occur on the third day, with prayers to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity.Govardhan Puja is observed on the fourth day of the festival.The celebration concludes with Bhai Dooj, when sisters perform the Tika ceremony to pray for their brothers’ well-being, and brothers present gifts to their sisters.
