Nearly a year after being released from prison, a 50-year-old convict was attacked and killed by unidentified assailants while returning home from the market in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district.
Police said the victim has been identified as Sahboob Ali. He had served a sentence for killing his cousin over a land dispute. His family, police said, have now pointed fingers at his cousin’s family.
According to police, they received information on Friday afternoon that a man had been attacked by the roadside near Phulwariya village.
A police team immediately reached the spot, where locals identified the victim as Sahboob. He had multiple deep wounds inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon and was bleeding profusely when found, police said.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The body was sent for a post-mortem and the report is awaited.
During the preliminary inquiry, police learned that Sahboob had left home earlier in the day to offer namaaz and had informed his family that he would buy household items from the market before returning home.
According to Circle Officer, Bahraich, Pradumn Kumar Singh, Sahboob was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his cousin, Insan Ali, in 2005. He was released from jail and had been living in his ancestral home in Phulwariya.

Based on a complaint filed by Sahboob’s family, an FIR has been registered against three relatives of Insan Ali at the Nanpara police station on the murder charge, said Singh.
Four persons have been detained for questioning. No one has been arrested in the case.
Police said they are looking into the incident from all angles and collecting details about the case in which Sahboob was convicted. “We are trying to confirm with the deceased’s family to check the grounds on which Sahboob was released from jail,” said Singh.
