Two people were arrested for vandalising a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar in Ghaziabad’s Loni on Sunday, police said. The vandalism had triggered sit-in protests, leading to traffic disruption on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway, officers said.

“We have arrested two people who were allegedly involved in the incident. The two accused have been identified as Manish, 26, a resident of Sangam Vihar, Loni Border, and Jonty alias Prince, 26, a resident of Saraswati Vihar in Loni,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari.

The accused were arrested after police received information that a roadside statue had been damaged, the DCP added.

“A team was immediately constituted to apprehend the individuals potentially involved; consequently, a formal case was registered, and surveillance footage (CCTV) and other evidence were examined. Through swift action, the Loni Border Police have successfully arrested two accused individuals responsible…,” officers said.

A Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was also engaged in the investigation, the DCP added.

The incident also drew sharp reactions from political circles. BJP’s Loni MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar demanded stern action against the perpetrators.

“We’ll ask the police to take action….. Babasaheb is not of any one religion, he is from all 36 communities and the country, and hence everyone is angry…,” he said.

“The conspirators won’t be spared at any cost…. This is disrespectful and I feel hurt. The truth will come out…,” he added.
