Seven people were rescued after a fire broke out in a four-storey residential building in West Delhi’s Mohan Garden area on Diwali night, officials of the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said on Tuesday.

The blaze, which started due to firecrackers igniting domestic items, engulfed the first and second floors of the building.

According to DFS officials, the call regarding the fire was received around 10 pm on Monday. “Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control by 11.30 pm,” the official said. No casualties were reported.

According to fire officials, the fire was most likely caused by crackers being lit in the vicinity of the apartment building. Officials surmised that one of the crackers could have entered the apartment and started the fire.

In another incident, a massive fire broke out in two buildings at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Northwest Delhi early Tuesday morning. The DFS said a call was received at 1.25 am about the blaze in two godowns spread across around 1,000 square metres. Several cars parked near the godowns were also gutted, said fire officials.

“The godowns have a basement, ground floor and first floor. We rushed 40 fire tenders to the spot. The godowns had automobile repairing tools stored,” a DFS official said.

The firefighting operation was still underway till the early hours of Tuesday. According to fire officials, the fire department is investigating whether firecrackers sparked off the blaze.

In all, the DFS received over 280 calls for fire-related incidents from 7 pm on Monday night to 7 am on Tuesday morning.

In 2024, around 314 emergency calls were received during Diwali night.
