This year’s first supermoon is all set to rise in the night sky in October. Harvest Moon, which is the first of the three consecutive full supermoons this year, is expected to peak on October 6. It is believed to occur two weeks following the autumnal equinox, and it will likely offer several nights of bright moonlight in the early days of October. The autumnal equinox is the exact moment when the Sun is directly above the Earth’s equator, causing day and night to be of the same length.

Eager skywatchers are advised to keep an eye out for clear skies to get a lucid view of the full moon. The moon will appear larger and much lower on the horizon.

What is a harvest moon?

In simple words, a harvest moon is a full moon that occurs nearer to the start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. While in India we do not call the season autumn, it coincides with the period between late September and November in India.

During this period, the full moon rises earlier than usual, and this happens consecutively for a few nights. This makes the sky stay brighter for longer in the evenings. When it comes to appearance, the moon around this time looks similar to a big golden orange. This is because it is often low on the horizon, and one is viewing it through more of Earth’s atmosphere, such as sunlight or sunset.

Harvest moon is important for a variety of reasons. Long before electricity, farmers relied on moonlight to work after sunset. Back then, it was believed that around this time of the year, the farmers needed extra time to harvest their crops. This was to collect vegetables, grains, and fruits before winter set in.In times like these, the bright harvest moon gave them extra light to finish their tasks.

Today, even though we are technologically advanced and no longer need a harvest moon to light our farms, this time is eagerly awaited by skywatchers. Over the years, spotting the moon as it rises and witnessing its sheer size and colour has been an experience in itself for many around the world. Also, during this time, different communities around the world celebrate festivals to mark the occasion.

Will I be able to see the harvest moon in India?

The harvest moon occurs closer to the autumnal equinox in 2025, which will occur on October 6 and even October 7, depending on the time zone. Yes, you will be able to see the harvest moon in India in the evening and overnight on October 6 and 7.

Below is a tentative table of moonrise and moonset times on October 6, 2025 (the Harvest Moon evening) for major Indian cities:

City Moonrise Moonset
New Delhi 16:57 (4:57 PM) 04:37 (next day)
Mumbai 16:17 (4:17 PM) 03:55 (next day)
Kolkata 16:43 (4:43 PM) 04:20 (next day)
Chennai 16:48 (4:48 PM) 04:25 (next day)
Bengaluru 17:29 (5:29 PM) 23:44 (same night)

What to do to get the best view?

Since the moon looks the biggest and most orange at the time of rising, find a spot without tall buildings or trees that may block the view. Open spaces like a park, terrace, or grounds that are farther from city lights can offer you the clearest view. Although timings may change, check local times and plan to be at the spot 15 minutes before the moonrise. Also, weather is key; check weather apps for cloud cover, and plan a backup location in case the skies aren’t clear.

While the harvest moon is visible to all, binoculars or a small telescope can reveal surface details like craters and more. For photography, consider a camera with a tripod, or even a smartphone with night mode can let you click some cool pictures. If on a rooftop or in a remote spot, prioritise your safety by carrying a flashlight and inform someone where you will be – this is crucial if you are accompanied by children.
