Stress is perennial, but we must know how to conquer it. Its prevalence cannot overshadow over quality of life. Precisely, what Akshay Kumar suggested on The Kapil Sharma Show. “Stress ki jo bimari hai, woh itni gandi bimari hai. Mai jaanta hu, kisiko paise ki problem hai, kisiko relation mei koi problem hai. Sab barabar hai… Jahan mai rehta tha, woh ek chota sa bedroom tha, jahan 24 log hum saath mei rehte the..., ” he said.

Adding that the best way to deal with it is by living through every moment, the actor said: “The quick idea is that… simplify your life…you know why God has sent you, so that you can enjoy life because heaven is this only….”

But why is stress inevitable?

According to Delhi-based psychologist Arpita Kohli, “Stress is an unavoidable part of modern life, and its causes can vary widely from person to person. The most common sources include financial worries, relationship conflicts, job-related pressure, health concerns, and constant exposure to social comparison through digital media. When stress becomes chronic, it affects both physical and mental health. Physically, stress triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline — hormones that prepare the body for a ‘fight or flight’ response.”

Over time, this leads to problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, poor sleep, weakened immunity, and digestive issues. Mentally, prolonged stress can cause irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and even depression. Many people also resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating, smoking, or excessive screen time, which further harm overall well-being. Recognising these triggers and their effects is the first step toward managing stress effectively.

Simplifying life

Simplifying life does not mean giving up responsibilities, Dr Kohli elaborated. “It means organising priorities and removing unnecessary chaos. One of the most effective steps is to plan the day realistically, focusing on what truly matters rather than trying to do everything at once. Setting small, achievable goals helps reduce feelings of overwhelm. Learning to say ‘no’ to non-essential commitments and limiting multitasking also help conserve mental energy. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, eating balanced meals, and incorporating physical activity like walking or yoga can bring a sense of balance to everyday life.“

Digital detox — spending a few hours daily away from social media and screens — allows the mind to rest and reset. Creating a calm environment at home and practising mindfulness or deep-breathing exercises can further simplify one’s mental state. The key is to make time for yourself, even if it’s just 10 minutes of quiet reflection each day.

It’s all in the head

Mindset plays a crucial role in how a person experiences and responds to stress. People who see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow are less likely to feel overwhelmed. “A positive, purposeful outlook helps the brain produce calming neurochemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which improve emotional stability. Finding purpose — whether through work, relationships, or personal interests — gives life meaning and reduces feelings of helplessness. Gratitude practices, such as acknowledging small joys or achievements, can shift focus from problems to possibilities. Ultimately, stress is not only about what happens to us but how we interpret it. Developing emotional resilience and an optimistic perspective allows people to stay calm, make better decisions, and lead a healthier, more fulfilling life,” concluded Dr Kohli.
